US Soccer Player Development Initiatives
Effective August 1, 2017, US Soccer has adopted mandatory Player Development Initiatives (PDIs) to be implemented by all affiliated youth soccer programs, including AYSO. The goal of the PDIs is to create standard rules and regulations across youth soccer in the US, focusing on development of player's skills over results. Many of the PDIs are modeled on rules AYSO has followed for years, including small-sided games, reduced field and goal sizes, no goalkeepers in instructional divisions, and no offside offenses in instructional divisions. But some of these rules are going to be new to our program. Below is a link to a presentation that explains the rules in greater detail. We recommend that all parents and volunteers read through the presentation to become familiar with the new rules. The key changes are as follows:
• No heading in 12U and below
• No punting in 10U and below
• The addition of a "Build Out Line" (BOL) in 10U only
• No goal keepers in 8U and below
• Kick-ins replace throw-ins in 7U and below
• Change in team sizes in 8U and below (please note that for field space reasons, our region has opted to remain with 5v5 games in 7U and 8U, but will be adopting the PDI recommended 4v4 games in 6U)
• Change to birth year registration
